Molly, daughter of a wealthy New York industrial, acompains her father, who emigrated in his youth from a schtetl in Russian Poland, to his home, where his brother's - a wealthy wood trader - daughter is going to marry. The Polish relatives are still living rather traditional, while Molly is a typical Yankee flapper with almost no sense for her relatives customs. A clash of cultures is programmed. Molly, for instance, teaches the cantors to shimmy. But on her cousin' wedding day, while just playing for fun a yiddishe wedding, a Thora teacher, who lives at the house, puts actually the ring over her finger, and makes her, according to yiddishe law, to his wife. Because he loves her, he refuses a divorce, at least for the next five years. He leaves his schtetl and visits his uncle in Vienna, where he attends the University and after a while becomes fully aclimated to Central European customs, as well as an respected writer. Completely changed in his manners he meets Molly again, she falls in love with him, but doesn't tell her who he really is, because he wants to surprise her...
