Lupino, Reginald Owen, James Gleason
An entertaining but flimsy Raft
vehicle, this picture mixes his gangster image with comedy in an unsatisfactory
combination. Raft, a streetwise hood, hooks up with impoverished Miami socialite
Costello and they decide to form a partnership, converting her old family
mansion into a hideaway gambling casino. Raft feels that Costello's good looks
will draw a crowd and with the profits she'll be able to cover her debts.
However, Raft's henchmen - Gleason, Kennedy, and Overman - are more suited to
society's dregs than to its upper crust and concoct a scheme to ruin the
partnership, fearing that Raft has forgotten his roots. The comic trio hire a
pair of cons - Owen and Lupino - to pose as a British colonel and his niece and
to persuade Raft that this high-society woman isn't his type. When Lupino sets
her sights on Raft, he falls for her and forgets about his initial interest in
Costello. Gleason, Kennedy, and Overman soon realize that Lupino has
overstretched her limits and is actually trying to snare Raft for her own
financial gain. Raft is soon clued in on Lupino, causing him to realize that it
is Costello he has loved all along.
James Gleason puts Ida Lupino
herself over his knees and applies a spanking to her famous behind in front of
others, with his heavy hand.
